Analysis/Graph Case Weights

Click the W (Weight) button on any of the module or graph dialog boxes to display the Analysis/Graph Case Weights dialog box. In this dialog box, you can adjust the contribution of individual cases to the outcome of an analysis by weighting those cases in proportion to the values of a selected variable. Use the options in this dialog box to specify case weights that are different from the spreadsheet case weights that you have previously set [via the Tools tab Weight option (ribbon bar) or the Tools menu - Weight command (classic menus)]. The case weights that you select here for the analysis/graph can be saved for future use.

Use Spreadsheet weights

Select the Use Spreadsheet weights option button to specify that the analysis use the spreadsheet case weights (specified via the Spreadsheet Case Weights dialog box). Any changes made on the Analysis/Graph Case Weights dialog box will also be made to the spreadsheet case weights. This is the default mode.

Use weights for this Analysis/Graph only

Select the Use weights for this Analysis/Graph only option button to indicate that you will make separate case weights to use for this specific analysis/graph. The spreadsheet case weights will remain unchanged.

If you have Use weights for this Analysis/Graph only selected and you then select the Use Spreadsheet weights option button, a message is displayed asking Would you like to reset this dialog to use the Spreadsheet case weights?

  • Click the Yes button to copy the current spreadsheet case weights into the Analysis/Graph Case Weights dialog box.

  • Click the No button to leave the current state of the Analysis/Graph Case Weights dialog box as is (and it will be copied to the Spreadsheet Case Weights dialog box when you click the OK button in the Analysis/Graph Case Weights dialog box).

Weight variable

Use the Weight variable box to designate the variable in the spreadsheet that you want to use as the weight variable. You can type in the variable name (or number) that you want to use, or double-click the Weight variable box or press F2 to display the Select Variable dialog box. The Select Variable dialog box displays a list of spreadsheet variables from which you can select the weight variable.

In most types of analyses, the values of the weight variable are rounded to the nearest integer and used as multipliers of cases when the file is processed. The statistical procedures in some analyses can use fractional weights, and in those types of analyses, specific information about how weights will enter into the computations is described in the help windows of those Statistica analyses.

Status

The Status group box displays whether the weighting variable is in use (On) or not (Off). Note that this is also displayed in the  Statistica application Status Bar.

OK

Click the OK button to accept your case weights and return to the current analysis/graph.

Cancel

Click the Cancel button to return to the current analysis/graph. Any changes made to the case weights will be disregarded.
