Recoding Values

In the Recode Values of Variable dialog box, you can recode or "translate" the original values of the currently highlighted variable into new values (dependent upon the values of any variables in the current data set). Using this facility, you can recode values of the variable into up to 17 "category" values (16 defined categories and "undefined" values).

This "quick Recode" facility (available from the spreadsheet at any point of an analysis via the Data tab or menu Recode command) can be used to assign codes (or "category values," typically small integers) to a variable. A typical application of this tool is to create values of a new "grouping" variable in order to identify subsets of data as groups to be compared in subsequent analyses. For example, "assign the value of 1 to subjects older than 17 and 2 to subjects younger than 18" or "assign the value of 1 to male subjects 18 to 25 years old with cholesterol levels below 200 and 2 to male subjects 18 to 25 years old with cholesterol levels above 200, and assign the missing data value to all other subjects."
